Inspired by The Cristero War (also called La Cristiada or Cristero Rebellion) was a major armed conflict in Mexico from 1926 to 1929.It arose from the Mexican government’s strict enforcement of anti-clerical provisions in the 1917 Constitution, especially under President Plutarco Elías Calles. His 1926 “Calles Law” sharply restricted the Catholic Church’s activities—limiting the number of priests, closing religious schools, seizing Church property, banning public worship, and expelling foreign clergy.After peaceful protests and an economic boycott failed, Catholic rebels (mostly rural peasants in west-central states such as Jalisco, Michoacán, and Guanajuato) rose up. They called themselves Cristeros and fought under the battle cry “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” (“Long live Christ the King!”). The conflict involved guerrilla warfare, atrocities on both sides, and the deaths of an estimated 90,000 people (combatants and civilians).The war ended in June 1929 through U.S.-brokered negotiations (led by Ambassador Dwight Morrow) known as los arreglos. Churches reopened and some restrictions eased, though the underlying anti-clerical laws remained in force for decades.
